Names and Epithets
Mercury (or Mercurius in Latin) is one of the most important and dynamic gods in Roman mythology.
Fast on his feet and quick with his words, he’s best known as the god of money, trade, communication, poetry, travel, luck and boundaries.
Whether it was delivering messages between gods or or zipping across borders faster than the eye could follow, Mercury was always on the move, clever, charming, and impossible to pin down.
His name is thought to come from Latin words like merx (merchandise), mercari (to trade), and merces (wages), all closely tied to commerce and exchange.
But Mercury’s role went beyond business. He was also associated with crossing borders, both physical and symbolic, serving as a bridge between worlds, from earth to the heavens and beyond. Our kind of Super Hero!
